Did you know that 40% of men over the age of 35 experience hair loss? But the problem is not only limited to men – at some point in their lives, 25% of women are affected as well.
Fortunately, help is readily available. Here’s a breakdown on all the ways you can help your crowning glory.
Minoxidil Hair Lotions
Minoxidil is thought to work by prolonging the growth phase of hair follicles, increasing blood flow, and stimulating them to grow. It has been shown to effective in about 50% to 75% of users. But some formulations are better than others, for example, many prefer Sloane Inc Hair Recovery Serum, which feels less sticky than other minoxidil products, and also contains Vitamin B6 and Gingko Biloba for added hair growth!
Hair Growth Pills
Men have the added option of using a hair growth pill: Finasteride. What does it do, exactly? Well, it actually inhibits 5 Alpha Reductase, an enzyme which converts Testosterone into the more powerful Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – thus reducing the levels of DHT in the body. Up to 90% of people respond to the treatment. But do take note that this treatment is only available for men, not women.
Many men also have reservations taking this pill, because of the notorious side effect: decreased libido. While this only affects 4% of patients, there’ve been reports of permanent sexual side effects. If you’re willing to take the risk, finasteride is a fantastic way to turn the tables on hair loss.
Hair loss treatments have gotten a lot more interesting lately. Besides using lotions and medications, there’s even a laser you can use to aid hair growth.
The Revage 670 Laser is an FDA approved, low level diode laser which uses stimulates blood flow to the hair follicles. This enhanced blood flow sends dormant hair follicles into the active growth phase while encouraging cell and tissue regeneration for thicker, smoother, and more durable hair.
The treatment is surprisingly comfortable, which involves sitting under the laser for 30 minutes. For best results, the treatment should be done twice a week for 6 weeks, once a week for the next 16 weeks, followed by occasional touch-ups to maintain the results.
Studies have shown that the Revage 670 Laser produces an 85% success rate in halting the progression of hair loss, and up to a 39% increase in fullness. Impressive indeed!
The great advantage is that there’s no need to worry about the side effects associated with lotions and pills. Revage is also safe for both men and women, unlike finasteride.
For anyone that might be interested, Revage 670 Laser costs $200 a session at The Sloane Clinic’s ION Branch in Singapore. It’s definitely my treatment of choice for hair loss because of its efficacy, convenience, and safety!
